An Air India Airbus A350-900 operating flight AI111 from Delhi to London Heathrow made a precautionary return to the national capital on Thursday following a suspected technical issue, with initial indications pointing to abnormal onboard noises as the trigger.

The flight departed Delhi at around 6 am and was diverted while flying over Saudi Arabian airspace after being airborne for several hours. Sources said unusual sounds were detected inside the aircraft , prompting the crew to follow standard safety protocols and opt for a return. The aircraft landed safely in Delhi at approximately 12:30 pm, completing nearly seven hours in the air.

While the airline has not disclosed the precise cause, aviation experts suggest the issue may be linked to hydraulic systems, environmental control systems, or landing gear components , which can produce abnormal noises if malfunctioning. In advanced aircraft such as the Airbus A350-900 , onboard monitoring systems are designed to alert pilots to such irregularities, often leading to precautionary diversions even without immediate risk.

Air India described the incident as a “precautionary air-return” and said the aircraft is undergoing extensive technical evaluations to determine the exact fault. The airline reiterated that the decision was in line with its safety-first approach.

The same aircraft (VT-JRF) had reported a technical issue earlier this month during a New York-Delhi flight, which was diverted to Shannon, Ireland. While no official link has been confirmed, the recurrence has raised attention around possible underlying system concerns.

No injuries were reported, and the airline is arranging alternative travel for passengers as part of its response.
