
Meta's Facebook, Instagram Suffer Global Login Outage, Users Report Access Issues
Meta-owned social media platforms Facebook and Instagram experienced a temporary outage on Sunday, with users across several countries, including India, reporting difficulties logging into their accounts.
According to Downdetector, which tracks outages through user-submitted reports, complaints surged during the afternoon before gradually declining a couple of hours later, suggesting that services were being restored. Several Facebook users encountered the message: "Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes." Some Instagram users also reported intermittent access issues.
Meta did not immediately respond to media queries seeking comment on the disruption or its cause.
Large-scale social media outages are commonly caused by server or data centre failures, software deployment errors, cloud infrastructure issues, network routing problems, database synchronization failures, or configuration mistakes. Unexpected traffic spikes and, in some cases, cybersecurity incidents can also temporarily affect platform availability.
Companies such as Meta typically activate their site reliability and engineering teams during such incidents to identify the root cause, isolate affected systems, restore critical services, and continuously monitor platform performance until normal operations resume. Post-incident reviews are generally conducted to strengthen infrastructure and reduce the risk of similar outages in the future.
While the disruption lasted only a few hours, it highlighted the increasing reliance on social media platforms for communication, business operations, digital marketing, customer engagement, and online commerce. Even short-lived outages can interrupt advertising campaigns, delay customer support, affect creators and small businesses that depend on these platforms for income, and disrupt access to real-time information. The incident underscores the importance of resilient digital infrastructure and effective incident response as billions of users worldwide continue to rely on social media for both personal and professional activities.
