Meta Alert Leads to Swift Rescue as UP Police Save Youth in 8 Minutes
A timely alert from Meta and swift action by the Uttar Pradesh Police helped save the life of a 25-year-old man in Meerut after he allegedly attempted suicide, officials said on Monday.
The incident highlights the growing role of technology-assisted interventions in preventing self-harm and enabling rapid emergency response.
According to police, the youth, a resident of Sardhana in Meerut district, uploaded a video on Instagram on June 7 in which he appeared to be consuming a white-coloured liquid. The post carried an emotional message that raised concerns about his well-being.
Under a coordination mechanism between Meta and the Uttar Pradesh Police, the social media platform flagged the content as a potential self-harm risk and sent a suicide alert to the Police Social Media Centre at police headquarters at 6.53 pm.
Acting immediately on the alert, the centre shared the available mobile number and location details with Meerut Police. Under the supervision of senior officers, a police team rushed to the youth's residence and reached there within eight minutes .
Police found the man in a critical condition, with a bottle containing a suspected liquid substance lying nearby. With the assistance of family members, officers quickly shifted him to a nearby hospital, where doctors provided treatment and stabilised his condition .
During subsequent counselling, the youth told police he had been struggling with emotional distress following the end of a relationship. Authorities said counselling and guidance were also provided to his family.
Officials noted that the rescue demonstrates the effectiveness of the Meta-UP Police partnership , which has been operational since 2022. The system enables authorities to receive alerts related to possible suicide or self-harm posts on Facebook and Instagram, allowing for immediate intervention .
According to Uttar Pradesh Police, action taken on such alerts has helped save the lives of 3,011 people across the state between January 1, 2023, and May 31, 2026.
