Lionel Messi’s GOAT India Tour has captured the hearts of fans across the country, blending thrilling football action with star-studded appearances. While Kolkata’s leg began with chaos, Hyderabad delivered a smoother and memorable experience for the global icon and his supporters.

Kolkata Commotion:

Messi’s arrival at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata was highly anticipated, with fans paying between ₹5,000 and ₹15,000 for tickets. However, the event quickly descended into chaos as the football star was largely surrounded by VIPs, politicians, and celebrities, preventing fans from seeing him. Messi stayed at the stadium for barely 10 minutes, leaving fans frustrated and disappointed. Some even resorted to vandalism, throwing chairs and bottles amid the mismanaged event. Several attendees expressed anger over the organizers’ focus on commercial interests, with many calling the event a “fraud.”

Despite the unrest, Messi met a few VIPs during his Kolkata visit. He interacted with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his family, posing with Khan’s youngest son, AbRam. Businessman Sanjiv Goenka, owner of India’s oldest football club Mohun Bagan, also met Messi and presented him with a special gift. Additionally, Messi virtually unveiled a towering 70-foot statue of himself at Sree Bhumi Sporting Club, Kolkata, marking a historic moment for Indian football fans.

Hyderabad: A Successful Second Leg:

The Hyderabad leg at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, offered fans a well-organized and engaging experience. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy played a key role in ensuring smooth conduct, enhancing both security and fan engagement. Fans were treated to a friendly 7v7 exhibition match between RR9 and Aparna All-Stars. Revanth Reddy himself scored a penalty, while Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Luis Suárez participated in dribbles and rondos with young players. Messi also presented the GOAT Cup to RR9 for their performance.

The match included a fun penalty shootout, with Messi even acting as goalkeeper for some shots. The Argentine superstar later took a lap of honour around the stadium, waving to fans who cheered in delight. During the event, Messi expressed gratitude: “I just wanted to thank you for the love today and always. It’s an honor for us to be able to share these days here in India with you.”

Star-Studded Meetings:

Messi’s Hyderabad visit included interactions with key dignitaries. CM Revanth Reddy felicitated Messi, while Rahul Gandhi did the same for Suárez. Fans also enjoyed musical performances and photo opportunities, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere.

Looking Ahead:

Messi will now head to Mumbai for the final leg of his tour, where he is scheduled to meet Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri. The Worli Sea Link in Mumbai has been illuminated with Messi’s portrait in tribute to the football legend.

After the Kolkata setback, Hyderabad provided a memorable experience, showcasing both India’s passion for football and the importance of organized, fan-friendly events. Messi’s tour continues to inspire, bringing together sports, entertainment, and a celebration of global football culture.
