In a moment that could mark one of Kerala’s most celebrated sporting occasions, the reigning world football champions Argentina, led by none other than Lionel Messi, are set to visit the state in March 2026, Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman announced on Monday.

Speaking at a function under the Sports Vision 2031 initiative in Malappuram, the minister revealed that official communication confirming the visit had been received from the Argentina team two days ago. “We received mail from the Argentina team confirming their arrival in March. They have also mentioned that an official announcement will be made soon,” Abdurahiman sai d, adding that all preliminary arrangements for the high-profile visit are already in place.

Initially, the state government had planned to host the South American giants at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi this month. However, delays in completing renovation and approval processes forced a change in schedule. “Even though we expected to complete the facilities in time, some inconvenience delayed the stadium work, and the necessary approval could not be obtained. Hence, we could not host the match this month,” the minister explained.

Abdurahiman stressed that rescheduling international fixtures is a normal occurrence and urged people to view the development positively. “Efforts to bring such a major football event to Kerala itself are commendable. This is not about victory or defeat, it's about our vision and ambition,” he said.

Highlighting the government’s broader sports strategy, the minister noted that Kerala aims to position itself as a hub for the sports economy, with plans to host multiple international events in the coming years. “Football and cricket have become part of a growing sports economy that provides employment to lakhs. Kerala will be an active participant in this new era,” he added.

Earlier, the Sports Department and sponsors had announced Argentina’s proposed friendly match against a top international team in Kochi this November. However, the world champions later released their November fixture list, which did not include any match in India.

If confirmed officially, Argentina’s 2026 visit would mark a historic first for Indian football fans bringing Messi and his star-studded squad to the football-loving state of Kerala.
