Messi Inspires Inter Miami Comeback Win With Goal and Assist Against New England
Lionel Messi produced a match-winning performance, scoring a goal and providing an assist as Inter Miami came from behind to defeat New England Revolution 2-1 in an MLS regular-season encounter at Gillette Stadium on November 2.
The victory lifted Inter Miami to second place in the Eastern Conference, moving them one point ahead of New England with one match remaining. It also secured Miami's qualification for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. The match attracted 54,112 spectators, marking New England's largest home crowd of the 2026 season.
New England broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Dániel Gazdag converted a pass from Ilay Feingold and Peyton Miller. Miller, 18, registered his ninth assist of the season, while Feingold recorded his fifth.
Inter Miami equalised in the 69th minute through Germán Berterame, who finished a move involving Messi and Telasco Segovia. The goal took Berterame's tally to 10 goals and 10 assists in his debut MLS season.
Messi sealed the victory in the 83rd minute with a superb left-footed finish. After receiving the ball from Luis Suárez, he dribbled past three defenders before combining with Segovia and finding the bottom-right corner. It was Messi's 26th league goal and 16th assist, taking his total goal contributions to 42. Segovia registered his career-best 12th assist.
Earlier, Messi's 65th-minute attempt was saved by Matt Turner, while Berterame's rebound was cleared off the goal line by Brooklyn Raines. Turner also made three saves and recorded a New England club record of 33 appearances and 2,970 minutes this season.
The win marked Inter Miami's 10th away victory of the campaign, the highest by any team. New England's four-match winning streak ended with the defeat. Miami will host Charlotte FC, while New England face Orlando City SC on November 7 in their final regular-season fixtures.
