What was meant to be a glamorous football spectacle in Florida has now turned into a legal battle, with Lionel Messi facing allegations that he failed to honour a multi million dollar appearance agreement.

Football superstar Lionel Messi has been named in a lawsuit filed in Miami, where a local event promoter claims the Argentine legend breached a USD 7 million contract by not playing in one of Argentina’s exhibition matches in the United States last year.

The complaint was filed by Vid Music Group , a Miami based promoter that says it secured exclusive rights from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to organise and market two international friendlies involving Argentina in October. The agreement reportedly covered ticket sales, sponsorship rights and broadcast revenue tied to the matches.

According to court filings, Messi was expected to play at least 30 minutes in each game , unless he was ruled out through injury. However, during Argentina’s 1 to 0 victory over Venezuela at Hard Rock Stadium in South Florida on October 10 , Messi did not take the field and instead watched the match from a private suite.

The lawsuit argues that his absence significantly affected the commercial value of the event, as fans had paid premium prices largely for the chance to watch the World Cup winner in action.

Adding to the promoter’s frustration, Messi returned to the field just a day later for his club Inter Miami CF , scoring twice in a 4 to 0 win over Atlanta United FC in Major League Soccer. That appearance raised questions over why he was unavailable for Argentina’s fixture but fit enough for club duty within 24 hours.

Messi later featured in Argentina’s 6 to 0 win over Puerto Rico on October 14, but by then the controversy had deepened. Organisers say weak ticket sales for that second match caused further financial losses, compounding the damage they claim was already done.

While the exact amount being sought has not been publicly disclosed, the promoter alleges losses running into millions. Neither Messi nor the AFA had publicly responded to the legal claims at the time of reporting.

For a player whose presence alone can transform a routine exhibition into a global event, the lawsuit underlines just how financially powerful, and legally sensitive, the business of modern football has become.
