Melody To Meloni: 1 Gift, 1 Medal, 1 Deal, 1 Confused Market, But Did You See Those Pictures?
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Rome on Tuesday evening for the final leg of his five-nation tour, few could have predicted that a ₹5 toffee would end up moving the Indian stock market. But that was just one of many extraordinary moments in what turned out to be a historically packed 24 hours in the Eternal City.
Modi was received at the airport by Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Tajani , a fitting welcome given that Tajani had personally extended Giorgia Meloni’s invitation to Modi back in December. In a gesture of warmth rarely seen in high diplomacy, Modi posted about his arrival on X in Italian, signalling to the Italian people just how seriously India takes this relationship.
The evening only got better from there. Meloni hosted Modi for dinner and then accompanied him on a private visit to the iconic Colosseum , the two leaders walking through a 2,000 year old amphitheatre under the Roman night sky, exchanging views on global affairs. Meloni posted a selfie with Modi at the Colosseum, captioning it simply: "Welcome to Rome, my friend!" The internet, predictably, erupted.
Then came the Melody moment . Modi presented Meloni with a packet of Melody toffees during their meeting, and Meloni immediately shared a video on X. " Prime Minister Modi brought as a gift, a very, very good toffee, Melody ," she said, after which both leaders burst into laughter. It was Meloni who first coined the word "Melodi" in 2024, combining their names, and since then the pair have routinely gone viral for their camaraderie.
The candy carried a double meaning, a nod to the beloved Indian toffee brand and a wink at their famous internet nickname. The joke landed perfectly. So perfectly, in fact, that it accidentally moved the Indian stock market.
Shares of Parle Industries surged 5% intraday to Rs 5.25 after the viral moment. There is, however, a critical twist: Parle Industries is not the manufacturer of Melody toffees. It operates in infrastructure, real estate development, and paper waste recycling. Melody is produced by Parle Products , the privately held FMCG giant behind Parle G, Monaco, and Mango Bite, and it is not listed on any stock exchange.
The surge happened simply because Parle Industries was the only stock retail investors could find after Meloni's video went viral. A diplomatic gift had accidentally pushed a completely unrelated infrastructure firm into the upper circuit. Only in India.
But beyond the chocolate and the chuckles, Wednesday was a day of enormous substance. Modi and Meloni announced the elevation of India Italy ties to a Special Strategic Partnership , the highest level of engagement ever reached between the two nations.
"I am happy to announce that we are upgrading India Italy relationship to Special Strategic Partnership," Modi declared at a joint press statement in Rome. He also unveiled the India Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 , noting that over 400 Italian companies are already operating in India. The two nations set an ambitious trade target of €20 billion by 2029, up sharply from €14 billion, with Meloni noting that the EU India Free Trade Agreement could help both sides get there faster.
At the heart of the partnership is a bet on complementary strengths, combining Italy's industrial design and manufacturing excellence with India's scale, engineering talent, and innovation ecosystem of over 100 unicorns and 200,000 start ups.
A key pillar of the new cooperation is the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor , the ambitious trade and infrastructure route connecting India through the Gulf states, Egypt, and the Mediterranean Sea all the way to Italy's port of Trieste, a project that could reshape global trade routes for decades.
Security and counter terrorism also featured prominently, with Modi stating that India and Italy agree that terrorism is a serious challenge to humanity and highlighting their shared initiative against terror financing as a model for the world.
Away from the bilateral talks, Modi also received one of the highest honours of his diplomatic career. He was conferred the 2026 Agricola Medal , the highest honour of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, by FAO Director General Qu Dongyu at the historic FAO Plenary Hall in Rome. Modi dedicated the medal to the food providers of India, saying it was an honour for millions of Indian farmers, livestock keepers, fish farmers, agricultural scientists and workers.
Modi also met Italian President Sergio Mattarella , interacted warmly with members of the Indian diaspora, watched cultural performances at his hotel, and signed an autograph for a child who greeted him with a hand drawn portrait.
Meloni credited the extraordinary progress in bilateral ties to seven meetings with Modi over the past three and a half years, describing a friendship built on mutual respect and trust.
This was Modi’s first standalone bilateral trip to Italy, distinct from his earlier G7 attendance in June 2024. It brought the curtain down on a five nation tour spanning the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy, a diplomatic sprint that produced strategic partnerships, trade frameworks, climate agreements, and one very memorable packet of toffee.
