The Russia-Ukraine ceasefire in Oleshky has sparked a diplomatic dispute between the White House and the Vatican, with both highlighting their roles in securing a humanitarian pause. While Washington credits US First Lady Melania Trump with brokering the truce, the Vatican says Pope Leo XIV’s earlier appeals to Russian President Vladimir Putin helped pave the way for the agreement.

The six-day ceasefire began on October 27 and is scheduled to last until November 1. Russian and Ukrainian officials reported no violations during its first 30 hours, allowing preparations to deliver food and medicines and evacuate civilians.

Oleshky, in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, has remained under Russian control since February 2022. The destruction of the nearby Kakhovka Dam in 2023 compounded the devastation. With limited electricity, mined roads and severe shortages of essential supplies, an estimated 1,700–2,000 residents remain in the town.

The White House said Melania learnt about the humanitarian crisis during a private discussion at her Fostering the Future Together event alongside the United Nations General Assembly in New York. She and her representative subsequently contacted Russian and Ukrainian leaders to negotiate the truce’s terms and timing. Washington described her as an “Exclusive Intermediary” and said the initiative used a communication channel previously established to reunite Ukrainian children separated from their families. That effort had facilitated six reunifications involving 34 children, according to the White House.

Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets thanked Melania and her team for coordinating the negotiations. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude and said Ukraine was ready to receive evacuees.

However, the Vatican highlighted Pope Leo’s earlier intervention. On October 16, the pope spoke by telephone with Putin and urged humanitarian access to Oleshky. The Kremlin subsequently said Putin had agreed to cooperate in protecting residents and delivering essential supplies. The pope’s special envoy, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, had also raised the crisis with Russian authorities in Moscow.

The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano highlighted the pope’s efforts on October 24. Melania’s adviser, Marc Beckman, claimed she had brokered the deal single-handedly, while Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin emphasised the pope’s earlier appeals. The White House’s announcement did not mention the pope’s intervention.

The truce comes as Washington pursues renewed negotiations, with technical talks discussed for November and Abu Dhabi and Switzerland mentioned as possible venues. However, Russia’s demand for Ukraine to surrender the entire Donbas region remains unacceptable to Kyiv, which seeks security guarantees and long-term military funding.

Meanwhile, the wider war continues. A Russian drone attack on Kharkiv injured five people, including a four-year-old child, while Moscow claimed its air defences downed 531 Ukrainian drones.
