The government of Meghalaya has approved an ordinance granting official language status to Khasi and Garo , alongside English, in a major step toward recognising the state’s indigenous communities. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the move will allow both languages to be used in government communication and administration.

Khasi and Garo are the native languages of the Khasi and Garo tribes , two of the largest indigenous groups in the state. By giving them official status, the government has formally acknowledged their cultural and social importance, bringing tribal languages into the core of governance.

Under the new ordinance, citizens will be able to interact with government offices, access services, and understand official communication in their own languages , making administration more accessible and inclusive. The decision is expected to particularly benefit rural and tribal populations who may not be fluent in English.

The move will also enable legislators to speak and participate in Assembly debates in Khasi and Garo , strengthening democratic participation by allowing representatives to express themselves more effectively in their native tongues.

Experts say the recognition will play a key role in the preservation and promotion of these languages , ensuring they remain relevant in formal domains and are passed on to future generations. It also opens up possibilities for the gradual introduction of Khasi and Garo in state-level examinations , improving educational access for students from tribal backgrounds.

Additionally, granting official status at the state level is expected to strengthen the case for including these languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India , which would provide national recognition and greater institutional support.

While the decision marks a significant policy shift, the government noted that implementation will take time, as systems for translation, training, and standardisation need to be developed.

Overall, the move is seen as a balanced step toward cultural preservation, administrative efficiency, and inclusive governance , ensuring that the voices of Meghalaya’s tribal communities are better represented in public life.
