Meghalaya is making steady progress towards hosting the 39th National Games from March 10 to 30, 2027, with a technical inspection committee expressing satisfaction over the state’s infrastructure development and preparations for the country’s biggest multi-sport event. The proposed dates are subject to final confirmation by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Sunaina Kumari, chairperson of the Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC), said the state was on track, expressing confidence in the progress of venue development and coordination among various government departments.

Her remarks came after a five-member GTCC team completed a four-day inspection from November 2 to 5, visiting proposed competition venues in Shillong and Jowai to assess infrastructure and the overall readiness for the Games.

“ We are satisfied with the progress so far,” Kumari said, adding that the committee was encouraged by the development work and preparations undertaken by the state.

She also praised the coordination between the state sports department, government agencies and other departments, saying that all stakeholders were working towards ensuring the successful conduct of the event. She acknowledged the contributions of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the Deputy Chief Ministers and Sports Minister Dr Vijay Kumar.

Meghalaya has proposed hosting 39 sporting disciplines across three cities, Shillong, Jowai and Tura. The proposed events include athletics, aquatics, archery, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, gymnastics, hockey, shooting, wrestling, weightlifting, kabaddi and several other disciplines.

The inclusion of taekwondo will be subject to the final decision of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), taking into account the state’s strong participation in the sport. The proposed list of disciplines is also tentative, with the IOA expected to finalise it in consultation with the GTCC.

Among the proposed venues are the JN Sports Complex, Shillong Golf Club, North-Eastern Hill University campus and Umiam Lake, along with other sporting facilities across the three host cities. The JN Sports Complex has also been proposed as the venue for the opening ceremony.

The GTCC was appointed by the IOA on October 14 under Kumari’s chairmanship. The dates for the 39th National Games are yet to be announced.
