Mega Cleanliness Drive Launched in Hyderabad, Set to Continue Till January 31

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) today launched a citywide Mega Cleanliness Drive aimed at making Hyderabad cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable. The drive, which will continue until January 31 , covers all 300 wards following the recent ward delimitation, making it one of the largest cleanliness initiatives undertaken by the civic body.

As part of the drive, GHMC teams are clearing long-pending garbage, including construction and demolition waste, from residential colonies and public spaces. Focused cleaning is being carried out along major roads, flyovers, lakes, drains, parks, and footpaths. Areas that are completely cleaned will also undergo beautification works to enhance the city’s overall appearance.

The initiative is being implemented under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 , under which GHMC plans to roll out 100 Mega Cleanliness Drives across the city . Officials said the programme goes beyond visible cleanliness and seeks to encourage behavioural change by transforming cleanliness into a people-led movement rooted in community participation . The objective is to build a shared culture of responsibility for public spaces and ensure long-term cleanliness at the neighbourhood level.

To strengthen accountability, GHMC will impose spot fines on those violating sanitation rules. Garbage-vulnerable points that are cleaned will be converted into ‘selfie points’ to promote awareness and discourage repeated dumping. Zonal and ward-level officers will conduct regular inspections to monitor progress and ensure sustained cleanliness.

GHMC has invited NGOs, CSR partners, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), educational institutions, youth groups, and other organisations to actively collaborate in the citywide effort. The civic body will provide full operational support, including on-ground coordination, to enable effective community participation and wider outreach.

Officials said the drive is also aimed at improving GHMC’s performance in national cleanliness rankings. Cities like Indore , which has consistently topped the Swachh Survekshan rankings, have demonstrated that sustained citizen participation, strict waste segregation, door-to-door collection, and continuous monitoring are key to long-term success. By adopting similar best practices and combining them with large-scale public involvement, GHMC hopes to position Hyderabad among India’s cleanest cities.

Emphasising that public participation is crucial, GHMC urged residents to avoid littering, segregate waste at source, and follow sanitation guidelines. Through this collective effort, the civic body aims to build cleaner streets, healthier surroundings, and a city driven by shared ownership and civic pride.
