Mbappe double powers Madrid past Marseille

Kylian Mbappe underlined his growing stature at Real Madrid by scoring twice to seal a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Marseille, marking his 50th goal for the Spanish giants in just 64 appearances.

On a night full of tension at the Santiago Bernabeu, Mbappe converted penalties in the 29th and 81st minutes, lifting Madrid after Timothy Weah had given Marseille an early lead in the 22nd. The victory also brought historic milestones for the club, their 200th win and 700th goal in the Champions League era.

Madrid’s task grew even harder in the 72nd minute when Dani Carvajal was sent off for head-butting Marseille’s goalkeeper, leaving the hosts to finish with 10 men. Yet Mbappé rose to the occasion, embracing the pressure that he insists fuels his best performances.

“I need to feel that pressure in moments like these,” the 26-year-old France captain said after securing his sixth goal in five matches this season. “It was tough, but this is the Bernabeu. Whatever happens, we believe we will win and tonight we proved it.”

The forward, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain last season, has quickly become Madrid’s talisman, finishing as the club’s top scorer in his debut campaign. He stressed his focus remains on collective success. “I don’t set limits. If it means scoring, pressing, or assisting, I’ll do whatever the team needs to win trophies,” Mbappé said.

He also praised new coach Xabi Alonso’s demand for high-intensity pressing up front. “The coach wants us to win the ball back quickly. Today he asked me to push forward and help the team recover possession high up. We’ll get better at it and it will bring us closer to winning more titles.”
