Mbappé, Vinícius Spark Ceuta Row After Covering Support Message On Shirts As Mbappé Responds

Real Madrid stars Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior have been drawn into Spain’s heated debate over migration after partly covering a solidarity message on shirts supporting Ceuta, the Spanish territory on the North African coast.

The players wore the shirts before Real Madrid’s La Liga match against Elche on Tuesday. The message read “Todos somos caballas”, meaning “We are all from Ceuta”. Mbappé, Vinícius and teammate Ibrahima Konaté rolled the shirts up towards their chests, obscuring the wording, before removing them ahead of the pre-match handshake. Real Madrid won 3-2.

The gesture drew criticism and support across Spain, with debate centring on whether the players were distancing themselves from a message supporting Ceuta residents or trying to acknowledge the suffering of migrants.

Mbappé has since explained his decision. Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, he said he had “full solidarity with Ceuta and all the victims”, but also wanted to recognise migrants who had died or were enduring harsh conditions. He said he did not want to rank one group’s suffering above another’s.

The sensitivity surrounding the shirt dates back to a major migration crisis in late July. On July 30, an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 people entered Ceuta from Morocco, many swimming around the border barrier. Spain says 141 migrants died at sea during the crisis, while most of those who crossed were subsequently returned to Morocco.

Ceuta is particularly sensitive because it is one of Spain’s two territories in North Africa, alongside Melilla, and forms part of the European Union’s external border. The sudden influx overwhelmed local reception facilities and intensified debate over migration, border security and Spain’s relationship with Morocco.

The same shirts were also worn by Abde Ezzalzouli, the Morocco international playing for Real Betis. After criticism from some Moroccan fans, Abde defended the gesture as a social message supporting Ceuta and its residents regardless of nationality.

The controversy has therefore grown beyond football, placing Mbappé and Vinícius at the intersection of sport, migration, identity and Spain-Morocco relations.
