Mbappé Scores Twice as Real Madrid Beats Barcelona 2-1 to Revive La Liga Title Hopes
Kylian Mbappé scored twice, including his 100th goal for Real Madrid, to inspire a crucial 2-1 victory over Barcelona in El Clásico, bringing his side back into contention for the La Liga title.
Mbappé struck the decisive goal in the 87th minute on Sunday, ensuring Real Madrid stayed within three points of Barcelona and preventing their fierce rivals from opening up a commanding lead at the top of the table.
Speaking after the match, the French forward described the result as a “team victory” that sent a “good message”, while cautioning against complacency with the season far from decided.
“Today sends a good message, but we can't think that the season is over, because nothing has been decided,” Mbappé said.
The victory also ended Barcelona's hopes of becoming the first team to win its opening 10 La Liga matches this season. The Catalan club had matched Real Madrid's record of nine consecutive victories from the start of the 1968-69 campaign.
A Barcelona win would have extended its advantage over Madrid to nine points. Instead, Mbappé's late strike kept the title race open and gave the Spanish giants a significant confidence boost.
The 26-year-old has now scored 100 goals in 116 appearances for Real Madrid. However, he played down his personal milestone, stressing that collective effort would be essential to achieving the club's ambitions.
“The credit goes to the team and the group,” he said, adding that Madrid's quality needed to be matched by unity and teamwork.
Real Madrid have now won five consecutive matches across all competitions since the international break. They remain one point behind second-placed Atletico Madrid, with Barcelona still leading the standings.
