Mathura Fortifies for Janmashtami Rush: 4,000 Police, Three-Tier Security and Traffic Diversions

Mathura is preparing for a security and crowd-management operation ahead of Krishna Janmashtami on September 4, when thousands of devotees are expected to converge on temples. More than 4,000 police personnel will be deployed for security and traffic duties.

The sensitive area is the Shri Krishna Janmasthan–Shahi Idgah complex, where a three-tier system is operating under Supreme Court directions. The Red Zone, covering the temple and Idgah, will be secured by central forces. The surrounding Yellow Zone will be handled by the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), while state police will oversee the Green Zone and manage devotees and darshan

The festival deployment is divided into 17 sectors, each headed by a DSP-rank officer, with SP-rank officers supervising the zones. Women police personnel will assist women devotees.

Traffic restrictions will be extensive. Vehicles arriving from Delhi, Haryana, Agra, Bareilly, Bharatpur and Gwalior will be diverted, while outside vehicles will be prevented from entering restricted city areas. Movement towards Shri Krishna Janmasthan will be curtailed. More than 125 barriers will regulate Mathura-Vrindavan routes, with vehicles directed to designated parking areas before devotees continue on foot.

Preparations reported for the Mathura-Vrindavan belt include 24 parking sites, while shuttle services and e-rickshaws are planned for last-mile movement from designated hubs in Vrindavan. Pedestrian-only stretches around temple areas are intended to reduce vehicle-pedestrian conflict and ease crowd flow.

Surveillance is another major layer. Drones and CCTV cameras will monitor key locations, while watchtowers will provide elevated views of dense crowds and potential bottlenecks. Plain-clothes intelligence teams will watch for suspicious individuals or activity. Bomb detection and disposal squads, dog squads and fire brigades will provide specialist response.

The combined strategy addresses three principal risks: crowd congestion, traffic disruption and security threats at sensitive religious sites. By separating vehicles from pedestrians, layering security forces and expanding real-time surveillance, authorities aim to keep access orderly while preventing a local incident from escalating during the festival’s busiest hours.
