A massive fire following a serious incident at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta has left multiple people dead and others injured, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Canada’s Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed the fatalities and injuries on Saturday, October 17. Global News reported, citing multiple military sources, that at least seven people had been killed and dozens injured.

The fire broke out in a training area at around 4 pm local time and spread beyond the base’s boundaries into the surrounding rural region. Reports described an explosion, although authorities have yet to establish the cause of the incident. Strong winds, with gusts reaching 100 kilometres per hour, fuelled the blaze and complicated firefighting operations.

“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” McGuinty said. He described the situation as “very, very active and delicate”, adding that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were involved in the investigation.

The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed the deaths and injuries in a statement, saying the full impact remained under assessment. It said casualty details would not be released until families had been notified. Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan said authorities were coordinating the response, with the welfare of military personnel, their families and the surrounding community remaining the priority.

Hospitals in Edmonton, around 180 kilometres northwest of the base, faced a major influx of injured people. Acute Care Alberta activated Code Orange at several healthcare facilities to coordinate resources for multiple patients with serious injuries. STARS Air Ambulance also dispatched aircraft from Edmonton and Saskatoon.

By around 11 pm on Saturday, the Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire was being held and property and critical infrastructure were protected. Fire crews continued monitoring the affected area. No evacuation order was in effect at the time.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the federal government was working closely with Alberta officials and local authorities. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the blaze “significant and tragic”, while Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe offered provincial assistance. Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also expressed support and urged residents to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.

CFB Wainwright is one of Canada’s busiest military training bases, housing the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre.

The incident also disrupted advance voting ahead of Alberta’s October 19 referendum on whether to begin a process that could lead to independence from Canada. Elections Alberta said polling locations affected by the fire closed early and ballots were transported securely.
