As the world-famous Medaram Sammakka–Saralamma Jatara draws closer, the sacred forest shrine is witnessing a massive surge of devotees, days ahead of the main celebrations. Regarded as Asia’s largest tribal congregation , Medaram is reverberating with devotional chants as pilgrims arrive in large numbers to seek blessings of the revered forest deities.

With Sunday being a holiday, devotees from Telangana and neighbouring states thronged Medaram in thousands. Pilgrims took ritual holy dips in the Jampanna stream , offered prayers at the Sammakka–Saralamma gaddelu , and presented jaggery as a traditional votive offering. The surroundings have been enveloped in a profound spiritual aura , reflecting deep-rooted faith and centuries-old customs.

The heavy inflow of pilgrims in tractors, buses, and private vehicles has resulted in severe congestion on all routes leading to Medaram. Anticipating the rush, the Telangana government and district administration have intensified arrangements well in advance. Even before the official start of the Jatara, crowd density has increased significantly, prompting authorities to strengthen traffic regulation and crowd management measures.

Though official figures are yet to be released, preliminary estimates indicate that over three lakh devotees have already visited the shrine in recent days. During the four main festival days, the turnout is expected to rise dramatically, with 1 to 1.5 crore devotees likely to attend. Large-scale deployments of police, revenue, health, and municipal staff have been made to manage the unprecedented gathering.

To enhance safety, the Telangana Police have introduced the Children Tracking & Monitoring System at Medaram. Under this initiative, QR code-enabled wristbands are being issued, particularly for children and elderly devotees. Scanning the code instantly provides guardian contact details, enabling quick reunification in case anyone goes missing in the vast crowds.

In addition, advanced surveillance systems, including AI-enabled CCTV cameras and drones , have been deployed for real-time monitoring of crowd movement and traffic flow. Comprehensive health and civic arrangements such as medical camps , a temporary hospital , and extensive sanitation arrangements have also been put in place to handle emergencies and maintain hygiene.

Despite the scale and complexity of the arrangements, devotion remains at the heart of Medaram. Continuous chanting, rituals, and offerings underline the enduring tribal traditions associated with the Jatara, as authorities work to ensure a safe, orderly, and spiritually fulfilling experience for millions of devotees.
