Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman are reuniting for “Masoom: The New Generation” , a modern reinterpretation of Kapur’s 1983 classic Masoom , with the project positioned as a contemporary family drama rooted in emotional nostalgia and generational conflict .

The film brings Rahman on board not only as music composer but also as co-producer , marking a deeper creative partnership between the two. The duo had previously collaborated on Elizabeth: The Golden Age and stage productions, and now return to revisit one of Indian cinema’s most cherished stories.

According to additional production details, the new film is said to be set in a multi-generational family world , reportedly centering around an elderly couple navigating memory, identity and shifting family bonds in their later years , reflecting a more layered expansion of the original narrative’s emotional core.

Kapur said the idea behind revisiting Masoom is to reinterpret its themes of love, betrayal, forgiveness and belonging through a modern social lens. He noted that today’s evolving definitions of family, identity and relationships make the story even more relevant now. He also emphasized that music remains central to storytelling in the film, praising Rahman’s ability to translate emotion into sound.

Rahman, in turn, described the project as a timeless emotional world worth reimagining , adding that he felt compelled to take on a creative production role beyond composing . He called his collaboration with Kapur a deeply meaningful artistic reunion and said the story’s emotional depth continues to resonate across generations.

The film will see the return of veteran actors Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah, who starred in the original 1983 film. They will be joined by Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kapur’s daughter Kaveri Kapur, indicating a blend of legacy casting and a new generation narrative approach.

Industry reports also note that the project has been in development for several years, with workshops and pre-production discussions involving returning cast members. Filming is expected to begin later this year.

The original Masoom (1983), based on Erich Segal’s novel Man, Woman and Child , remains remembered for its sensitive portrayal of a family disrupted by the arrival of an illegitimate child. With a screenplay by Gulzar and music by R D Burman, the film is still celebrated for iconic songs like Tujhse Naaraz Nahi Zindagi and Lakdi Ki Kaathi , making the upcoming reinterpretation one of the most anticipated nostalgic revivals in Indian cinema.
