Olympic bronze medallist and six-time world champion M C Mary Kom is contemplating a bold new chapter in her illustrious career: professional boxing. The 43-year-old, who made history by winning India’s first Olympic boxing medal in 2012, revealed her plans on Sunday during a cycle event in the capital.

Reflecting on her journey, Kom said, “Winning six World Championships was incredible. Although age restrictions now prevent me from competing further on the amateur circuit, a new opportunity has surfaced in professional boxing. I am taking time to consider it, working hard, and hoping to show people what I can still achieve.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest amateur boxers of all time, Kom continues to focus on nurturing young talent through her academy in Manipur . “I am deeply involved with the academy. Even when I cannot be physically present, I oversee operations through phone calls. My dream is to stay fit and active for as long as possible, regardless of age,” she added.

As India prepares to host major international sporting events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games and potentially the 2036 Olympics , Kom emphasized the role of sports in enhancing the nation’s global reputation. “Sports development is crucial. Without sports, it is difficult for a country to build recognition internationally. Sports propel a nation forward,” she said.

Kom also lauded government initiatives like Khelo India and the Fit India Movement , which aim to strengthen infrastructure and identify talent. Highlighting the inclusion of tribal youth in national programmes, she pointed to developments in Chhattisgarh . “Tribal Games that were once localized are now being elevated nationally under Khelo India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya are taking great steps to support tribal athletes. Awareness about tribal sports talent is finally growing,” she said.

With her eye on a professional comeback, Mary Kom’s next move promises to inspire a new generation of boxers, demonstrating that passion and perseverance can defy age.
