Markapuram Tragedy: 14 Burnt Alive After Fiery Bus Crash

Before dawn broke over Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district, a routine overnight journey turned into a nightmare, leaving behind charred remains, unanswered questions, and grieving families. Near Markapur, a private sleeper bus carrying dozens of passengers collided head-on with a tipper lorry, and within moments, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

Most passengers were asleep when the crash occurred between 5:30 and 6:00 am. The impact was so severe that the bus’s diesel tank explosion turned it into a fireball within minutes. Those inside woke not to the sound of brakes, but to suffocating smoke, intense heat, and desperate cries for help.

By the time the flames subsided, 14 passengers burnt alive , their bodies reduced to unrecognizable remains. More than 20 injured survivors managed to escape, some with critical injuries, by breaking windows or using the emergency exit.

Survivors recalled the chaos in fragments darkness, confusion, and panic. One passenger said he was thrown from his seat and later realized his clothes had caught fire. Preliminary investigations suggest that driver negligence or a possible steering failure may have caused the bus to veer off its lane and collide with the oncoming lorry. Officials are also examining whether overspeeding, fatigue, or mechanical issues contributed to the accident.

Beyond the immediate cause, the tragedy highlights deeper concerns. Experts point to serious fire safety lapses , including emergency exits failure and the use of flammable interiors in many private sleeper buses, which allow fires to spread rapidly and trap passengers.

The Markapur incident reflects a broader pattern. In the past six months, Andhra Pradesh has witnessed several fatal bus accidents, resulting in at least 45 deaths in six months , many involving vehicles catching fire after collisions.

Authorities have also raised concerns over inter-state bus registration loopholes , where operators register vehicles in distant regions to bypass stricter regulations, weakening enforcement.

In response, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow, announced compensation, and ordered a detailed probe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed condolences and announced financial assistance.
