Mario Pineida, Ecuadorian Football star, dies in apparent targeted shooting

Ecuadorian football was rocked on Wednesday as Mario Pineida, a 33-year-old defender for Barcelona de Guayaquil, was shot dead in what police described as an apparent attack in the northern part of the city. Another person was killed in the incident, while a third was wounded, authorities said.

The Interior Ministry of Ecuador confirmed Pineida’s death but did not provide further details. Barcelona de Guayaquil, one of the country’s top clubs, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that fans and the football community are mourning the defender. Authorities have described the incident as a direct attack, but no confirmed motive has been released yet. Police are investigating whether it was a targeted attack or related to robbery, but it remains unclear why Pineida was specifically targeted.

Pineida began his professional career at Independiente del Valle, playing from 2010 to 2015, before moving to Barcelona de Guayaquil in 2016. During his time there, he helped the team secure two league titles. He also had a brief stint in Brazil with Fluminense in 2022, adding international experience to his career.

Local media reported that the shooting took place in the Samanes neighborhood of Guayaquil, a city that has seen a worrying rise in violent crime. Ecuador is on track to record its deadliest year, with authorities reporting more than 9,000 homicides—up from 7,063 in 2024 and 8,248 in 2023. President Daniel Noboa has vowed to tackle criminal organizations linked to international drug cartels, as violence continues to escalate across the nation.

Tragically, Pineida’s death is not an isolated incident. In November, a 16-year-old Independiente del Valle player was killed by a stray bullet in Guayaquil. Earlier in the year, three young footballers from local clubs Maicol Valencia, Leandro Yépez, and Jonathan González also lost their lives due to gun violence.

The football community in Ecuador has been left in shock, mourning the loss of a talented defender whose career had spanned over a decade, as the nation grapples with rising violence.
