Maoist Era Ends in Andhra Pradesh: DGP Harish Kumar Gupta

The Maoist insurgency in Andhra Pradesh has entered its final phase, with state police declaring that left-wing extremism has been completely eliminated. Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta stated that Maoist presence in the state is now “zero.”

At a press conference in Mangalagiri , he confirmed the surrender of nine Maoists, including senior Central Committee member Chelluri Narayana Rao .

Over the past two years, police conducted 205 operations , leading to 18 encounters, 81 arrests, and 106 surrenders , effectively dismantling the Maoist network.

Narayana Rao’s surrender is seen as a major setback to the movement. Active since 1990, he spent over three decades underground and held key positions, eventually becoming a Central Committee member. He was involved in several high-profile cases, including the 2018 killing of Araku MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and the 2001 murder of a police inspector. Officials said he surrendered due to ideological disillusionment , health issues, and sustained pressure from security forces.

Police recovered explosives and communication equipment from the surrendered cadres, including BGL shells, detonators, gelatin sticks, cordex wires, and manpack sets.

The DGP assured that those who renounce violence will receive rehabilitation support , including financial aid and employment opportunities. He added that joint operations with neighboring states will continue to eliminate any remaining Maoist activity in border areas.
