Manvir’s Late Strike Lifts Mohun Bagan to Fifth in ISL Standings
Mohun Bagan Super Giant climbed to fifth place in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 standings after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC, courtesy of Manvir Singh’s late goal at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.
Manvir scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute, finishing with his chest from close range after Liston Colaço delivered a cross into the penalty area. The strike rewarded the Mariners’ persistence in a closely contested encounter in which both teams created several opportunities but struggled to find the net.
Chennaiyin started brightly, with Nikola Stojanovic firing over from distance, while Brison Fernandes and Irfan Yadwad also threatened. Mohun Bagan responded through Samir Zeljkovic and Alberto Rodríguez, but goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz produced crucial saves to keep the hosts at bay.
At the other end, Vishal Kaith denied Yadwad and Madih Talal, while Nawaz kept out attempts from Lee Erwin, Dejan Draxic and Manvir. The teams went into half-time goalless.
Mohun Bagan introduced Sahal Abdul Samad at the break and brought on Anirudh Thapa early in the second half. Later substitutions, including Colaço, proved decisive as the hosts finally broke through five minutes before full time.
The victory took Mohun Bagan’s tally to six points from three matches, with two wins and one defeat. They occupied fifth place, behind NorthEast United FC and Punjab FC, who had seven points each, while East Bengal FC and Bengaluru FC were also on six points but ahead on goal difference.
Chennaiyin, meanwhile, remained 11th with one point from three matches, having suffered two defeats and recorded one draw. The result underlined their need to improve their attacking efficiency and defensive resilience.
Mohun Bagan will face Punjab FC on October 31, with an opportunity to build momentum and move further up the table. Chennaiyin will host Kerala Blasters FC on the same day as they seek to recover from their difficult start to the campaign.
