Manipur: Suspected Militant Held, 7.65mm Pistol and Five Cartridges Seized
Security personnel have arrested an alleged militant belonging to the banned United Kuki National Army (UKNA) in Manipur’s Churachandpur district and seized a pistol, ammunition and other items from his possession, Assam Rifles said on Friday.
The militant was apprehended on October 13 at D Vaison village during an operation in the district, according to an official statement issued by the security force.
The arrested individual was allegedly involved in extortion, arms smuggling and recruitment of cadres for the banned outfit, the statement said. Further details about the operation and the identity of the arrested person were not immediately available.
During the operation, security personnel recovered a 7.65mm pistol and five cartridges from his possession. A smartphone, a handheld radio and other items described as war-like stores were also seized, the statement added.
Following his arrest, the individual was handed over to Churachandpur Police for further legal proceedings, Assam Rifles said.
The police are expected to carry out the necessary legal formalities and investigate the allegations against the arrested individual. Further details regarding the case were not provided in the statement.
The arrest comes amid ongoing security efforts in Manipur to curb the activities of armed groups and address concerns relating to illegal arms movement and extortion. Security forces have been conducting operations in different parts of the state to identify and apprehend individuals suspected of involvement in unlawful activities.
The United Kuki National Army is among the outfits operating in the region that have faced action by security agencies. The latest arrest highlights the continued focus of security personnel on suspected militant networks and their alleged activities.
However, the allegations against the arrested individual will be subject to investigation and legal proceedings.
Assam Rifles said the accused had been handed over to the local police, which will take further action in accordance with the law.
