Manipur Guv vows action on Illegal immigrants

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Saturday reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of illegal immigrants, urging the people not to allow “settlements of people beyond the borders.” He was speaking at public meetings in Churachandpur and Imphal, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of development projects worth ₹8,500 crore.

Bhalla said both the Centre and the state government were determined to prevent encroachment by foreign settlers, particularly along the state’s 398-km-long border with Myanmar. “We cannot allow our land to be encroached by people from beyond the borders. Both the state and the Centre are committed to taking effective steps to address this challenge,” he said.

The Governor also announced a three-phase resettlement plan to rehabilitate internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the ethnic violence in Manipur. He said additional security personnel and quick reaction teams (QRTs) had been deployed to ensure safety and stability.

Highlighting the state’s recent history, Bhalla noted that Manipur was one of the fastest-developing states in the region two-and-a-half years ago. However, it faced severe difficulties over the last two years due to violence and unrest. “Still, the state government and the Centre, along with the people of Manipur, have been able to bring back peace and normalcy to an extent. However, more efforts are needed,” he said.

The Governor emphasised the need for collective healing and rebuilding. “Today, we are at an important moment when we can heal, rebuild and restart for a new future. My sincere appeal to every citizen of Manipur is to rise above the differences and to work together towards peace and prosperity of our state,” he added.

Bhalla informed that looted arms had been recovered, farmers’ security was being ensured, and most health facilities that were shut during the unrest had been reopened. He also underlined the government’s initiatives for youth empowerment and social welfare.

Addressing the gathering in Churachandpur, Bhalla praised the district as a land of “rich cultural diversity and resilience,” noting its mosaic of tribal and ethnic communities. He said development in connectivity, infrastructure, education, and healthcare had created new opportunities for young people.

Referring to the government’s broader vision, Bhalla said taking development to the remotest corners of the country was central to the ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative. “It is the time to heal and look forward with dialogue, understanding and inclusive governance. I am confident that Manipur will emerge more resilient, more united and prosperous,” he said.

The Governor added that Churachandpur district remains a top priority, given its location along the border. Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February, with the Governor directly administering the state.
