Mangaluru Set for Cruise Tourism Push with Plans for World-Class Terminal

The Karnataka government has taken a significant step towards expanding coastal tourism by initiating talks to launch cruise services from Mangaluru, with plans also underway to examine the feasibility of building an international-standard cruise terminal. The initiative, aligned with the Centre's push to strengthen maritime tourism, is expected to boost tourist arrivals, create employment and position Karnataka as a key player in India's growing cruise industry.

Acting on the directions of Tourism Minister K J George, senior officials led by Tourism Secretary V. Ram Prasath Manohar held discussions in Mumbai with representatives of Waterways Leisure Tourism Limited, one of India's leading cruise operators. The company agreed in principle to conduct a detailed feasibility study before taking a final decision on commencing cruise operations from Mangaluru.

The discussions covered infrastructure requirements, operational needs, tourism demand and commercial viability. The company's technical team will visit Mangaluru next month to assess port infrastructure, tourism potential and supporting facilities, while also recommending a dedicated promotional strategy to establish the city as a prominent cruise destination in domestic and international markets.

The proposal complements the Centre's Cruise Bharat Mission, which aims to transform India into a global cruise tourism hub by 2047 through modern terminals, expanded cruise circuits and stronger public-private partnerships. Karnataka is also evaluating the development of an international-standard cruise terminal after officials studied operations at the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal.

Experts say Mangaluru is well positioned for cruise tourism due to the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), Karnataka's only major port, which already accommodates international cruise vessels and offers customs, immigration and e-Visa facilities. The city also benefits from seamless connectivity through its international airport, rail network and national highways.

The port has previously welcomed renowned cruise liners, including Regent Seven Seas, Norwegian Star, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruises, Oceania Cruises, AIDA Cruises and Royal Caribbean. If regular cruise operations begin, Mangaluru could serve as a gateway to destinations such as Goa, Kochi, Lakshadweep, Udupi, Gokarna, Murudeshwar, Coorg, Dharmasthala and Sringeri, generating higher tourist spending, supporting local businesses and creating jobs across hospitality, transport and tourism services.

Calling Karnataka's coastline rich in untapped potential, K J George said the government is committed to creating the infrastructure and ecosystem needed to develop cruise tourism, attract investments and establish Mangaluru as a premier maritime tourism destination.
