Mandi Experiences Morning Tremors, Officials Confirm Situation Under Control

Residents of Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district experienced a brief spell of anxiety on Sunday morning after a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck the region, sending mild tremors across several areas. While the shaking was noticeable, no casualties or damage to property were reported, bringing relief to local residents and authorities alike.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, the earthquake occurred at 9:13 am. The epicenter was located in the Mandi region at a latitude of 31.445 degrees and longitude of 76.993 degrees, with the quake originating at a depth of 8 kilometres beneath the Earth's surface.

Officials said the tremors were felt in different parts of the district, prompting some residents to step outdoors as a precaution. However, the earthquake was classified as minor, and no reports of structural damage or injuries had been received till the latest official update.

The incident has once again drawn attention to Mandi’s location in Seismic Zone 5, one of India's highest earthquake-risk categories. Areas falling within this zone are considered highly vulnerable to strong seismic activity and require strict adherence to earthquake-resistant construction practices.

Although Sunday’s tremor was relatively weak, experts note that even low-intensity earthquakes serve as reminders of the importance of disaster preparedness, public awareness and resilient infrastructure in mountainous states such as Himachal Pradesh.
