Man beaten over Bangladeshi suspicion in Bihar’s Madhubani, Attempt to murder case filed

A man was allegedly assaulted in Bihar’s Madhubani district after being wrongly suspected of being a Bangladeshi national, prompting police to register a case of attempt to murder and launch raids to arrest the accused.

The incident came to light after a video showing the assault went viral on social media. Acting swiftly, the police social media cell traced the incident to Chakda village under the Rajnagar police station area . Madhubani Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar said two youths seen attacking the victim have been identified as residents of Rajnagar. The victim, a mason by profession, was later found to be an Indian citizen from Birpur in Supaul district.

A case has been lodged under sections related to attempt to murder, and raids are underway to apprehend the accused. The SP warned that strict action would be taken not only against those involved in the assault but also against individuals spreading rumours and circulating violent videos online.

The incident highlights a worrying rise in mob-related attacks across parts of the country, often triggered by rumours, misinformation, and suspicion about identity or nationality. Experts point to the rapid spread of unverified information on social media platforms as a key factor behind such violence, with rumours often escalating into physical attacks before facts are checked. Courts have also stressed that violence based on suspicion undermines the rule of law and that such acts will invite severe punishment.

Officials say preventing mob violence requires not only strict policing and quick arrests but also greater public awareness about the legal consequences of such acts and responsible use of social media.
