Man attempts self-immolation outside Maharashtra Assembly over land access dispute
A man allegedly attempted self-immolation outside the Maharashtra Assembly in south Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon to highlight a dispute over road access to his agricultural land in Latur district , police officials said.
The incident occurred at Usha Mehta Chowk near the Vidhan Bhavan complex , where heavy security is usually deployed because the Maharashtra Assembly session is underway. Police personnel stationed in the area intervened quickly after noticing the man attempting to stage the protest.
The man was identified as Jyotiram Sahebrao Chavan, a farmer from Renapur in Latur district . According to police, he poured a non-inflammable liquid on himself in an apparent attempt to draw attention to his grievance regarding access to farmland.
Security personnel present near the legislative complex immediately prevented the situation from escalating and detained him before any harm could occur. He was then taken to the Marine Drive police station for questioning .
Police later registered a non-cognisable offence against Chavan . Officials said the protest appeared to stem from a long-standing dispute over a road leading to his farm, which he allegedly wanted authorities to address.
Authorities are examining the details of his complaint, while the swift intervention by security personnel prevented the protest from turning into a serious incident near the state legislature complex.
