Mamata warns Modi, says Amit Shah behaves like ‘acting PM’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of behaving like an "acting Prime Minister" and cautioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi against placing excessive trust in him.

Speaking to reporters outside Kolkata airport after visiting flood-affected areas in north Bengal, Banerjee said “Shah may one day become his Mir Jafar,” referring to the 18th-century Bengali general who betrayed Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah during the Battle of Plassey.

She alleged that the Election Commission’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was being carried out under Shah’s influence, implying that the process was politically motivated. “Unfortunately, the Prime Minister is aware of all his deeds,” Mamata added.

Banerjee’s remarks come amid rising political tensions in the state, highlighting her concerns about Shah’s growing influence over administrative and electoral affairs, which she claims could undermine democratic processes.
