Mamata Alleges BJP Threatening TMC Workers, Using Money to Win Support
Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday accused the BJP of using money and intimidation to influence people, alleging that police action against Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers had intensified and government officials were threatening members of her party.
In a statement shared by the Mamata AITC on social media, Banerjee claimed that district magistrates, block development officers (BDOs) and superintendents of police were being used to intimidate people.
“The BJP is using money and intimidation to influence people. Since yesterday, police atrocities have increased so much,” she said. The TMC supremo also alleged that while the BJP government was providing legal documents, including stamp papers and notarised affidavits, to people, similar facilities were being denied to her party.
She further claimed that even individuals approaching her office were being prevented from doing so, questioning the freedom available to people in the country.
“Even people who come individually are not allowed to come to my office. Can you imagine these atrocities? Are we independent? Do we have freedom in this country anymore?” Banerjee said. The former chief minister accused the BJP of attempting to induce people with money and threaten political opponents with legal action to secure their support.
“Our great leaders fought and sacrificed their lives for freedom, and today we have to witness the BJP buying people with money and threatening our workers, MLAs and MPs with jail if they join the Trinamool Congress,” she said. Banerjee challenged the BJP to compete with the TMC through political means rather than resorting to alleged intimidation.
“If you have the courage, fight politically. We have no objection to that,” she asserted.
Her remarks come amid allegations of political intimidation and pressure on party workers in West Bengal. However, the statement did not provide specific details of the incidents cited by her, and there was no immediate response from the BJP to the allegations in the report. The accusations add to the continuing political confrontation between the TMC and the BJP in the state.
