Mali Junta Leader Reasserts Control After Major Militant Offensive, Russia Expands Role

Mali’s military ruler Assimi Goita has reappeared publicly following a large-scale coordinated assault by Islamic militants and separatist groups , meeting Russia’s ambassador in Bamako and later addressing the nation to insist that the security situation is “under control,” even as instability continues across multiple regions.

The attacks, launched over the weekend, struck several strategic targets including Bamako international airport , the military garrison town of Kati, and key northern and central cities such as Kidal, Mopti, Sevare and Gao. The offensive was reportedly carried out by JNIM (al-Qaida-linked militants) in coordination with the separatist Azawad Liberation Front , marking one of the most serious security escalations in recent years.

Unverified battlefield accounts suggest that Kidal has come under separatist control after Malian and allied Russian-linked forces withdrew, raising concerns over shrinking state authority in the north. Other affected areas remain contested, with no clear confirmation of territorial control or casualty figures. Mali’s defence minister Gen Sadio Camara was reportedly killed , further intensifying the political shock.

Russia, a key military partner of the junta, has described the violence as a foiled coup attempt and claimed that its Africa Corps personnel assisted Malian forces in repelling the attackers. These claims remain unverified, but they underscore Moscow’s growing strategic footprint in Mali, where it has expanded influence following the withdrawal of Western forces.

For Russia, Mali represents a critical foothold in the Sahel, offering geopolitical leverage, access to mineral-rich regions, and a platform to project influence in West Africa. For Goita’s junta, Russian backing provides essential military support and regime stability amid mounting insurgent pressure, despite rising international scrutiny.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy has issued a security alert , warning of possible militant movements in Bamako. As fighting and uncertainty continue, both governance and territorial control remain fragile.
