Mali Army Convoy Ambushed in North as Jihadist-Separatist Alliance Fuels Security Crisis

A Malian army convoy was ambushed in the country’s conflict-hit north , leaving scores of soldiers reportedly killed or captured, in the latest attack exposing the worsening security situation in the Sahel nation.

The attack took place on Saturday in a remote area of the Gao region , where armed militants targeted a convoy of Malian troops and their partners. The Malian military confirmed the assault, saying armed groups had carried out an ambush and that a counterattack operation was underway . However, the army did not provide details about casualties or the extent of losses.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by two major armed groups the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) . Both groups said the assault caused heavy casualties and major material losses for the Malian forces.

FLA spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane claimed that several soldiers were killed, while others were captured. He also said military vehicles, including armoured vehicles, were destroyed or seized by the militants. Videos released by the rebels allegedly showed captured soldiers and military equipment, though the footage could not be independently verified.

The attack highlights the growing cooperation between jihadist organisations and separatist groups operating in northern Mali. Security observers have warned that such coordination could pose a major threat to the country’s stability and the authority of its military-led government. Mali has been battling a long-running insurgency as extremist groups expand their influence across the Sahel region , an area stretching south of the Sahara Desert that has become a major centre of militant activity.

Northern Mali has also been affected by a separatist movement led by Tuareg groups seeking independence for Azawad . In 2024, several separatist factions merged to form the FLA, which has since intensified attacks against government forces. The latest ambush comes amid a series of militant strikes on Malian security forces. The increasing collaboration between JNIM and FLA has created a new security challenge for Mali’s junta, which is struggling to restore control over areas affected by years of conflict.
