Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Confirms India Visit for BRICS Summit, May Visit Tamil Nadu

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that he will visit India in September for the BRICS Summit , where he is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and may also make a brief visit to Tamil Nadu.

Ibrahim disclosed the plans during a phone conversation with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay , describing the actor-turned-politician as his “friend” in a post on X. He said he informed Vijay about his India visit and the possibility of stopping in Tamil Nadu if time permits.

“I will be traveling to India in September to attend the BRICS Summit and hold a meeting with PM Modi, and if the opportunity arises, I will make a brief visit to Tamil Nadu,” Ibrahim said.

India will host the summit under its 2026 BRICS chairmanship with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Besides attending the summit, Ibrahim is expected to discuss trade, semiconductors, digital economy cooperation, connectivity and regional strategic issues with Modi.

Malaysia has steadily expanded engagement with BRICS and became a partner country in 2025. The grouping now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

During the call, Ibrahim again congratulated Vijay on assuming the “great responsibility” of leading Tamil Nadu and wished him “strength and wisdom” in governance. Vijay, founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) , was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 10.

Malaysia is home to around 2.75 million Persons of Indian Origin , nearly 90 per cent of whom speak Tamil, reflecting the deep cultural ties between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu.
