Malayalam actor Punnapra Appachan dies at 77

Veteran Malayalam film actor Punnapra Appachan passed away on Monday while undergoing treatment after sustaining injuries from a fall, industry sources said on Tuesday. He was 77 and breathed his last at a hospital in Alappuzha after suffering serious head injuries and internal bleeding .

A native of Punnapra in Alappuzha district, Appachan made his silver screen debut in 1965 with Othenante Makan, produced by Udaya Studio, where he played a soldier. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he became a familiar presence in Malayalam cinema, appearing in over a thousand films across Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi, and earning a reputation as one of the industry’s most dependable character actors.

He gained wide recognition for his performance as a trade union leader in Anubhavangal Paalichakal, a role that remains one of the defining moments of his career. Known for portraying villainous and strong character roles, Appachan acted alongside almost all major superstars of Malayalam cinema, from the era of Sathyan and Prem Nazir to later generations.

Punnapra Appachan was also a frequent collaborator of legendary filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan and appeared in several of his acclaimed works, including Mathilukal, Anantharam and Pinneyum. His notable films include Kanyakumari, Pichippu, Nakshathrangale Kaaval, Angakkuri, Ivar, Visham, Opol, Kollilakkam, Ithiri Neram Othiri Karyam, Aattakkalasham, Asthram and Paavam Krooran. Outside Malayalam cinema, he acted in Hindi and Tamil films as well, further widening his reach.

One of his final screen appearances was in Ottakkomban, starring Suresh Gopi. Despite the sheer volume of his work, Appachan often spoke about continuing in cinema purely out of passion, even when financial returns were modest.

Tributes poured in from across the film fraternity following his death. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the FEFKA Directors’ Union were among those who condoled his demise, remembering him as a committed artist who left an enduring mark on Malayalam cinema.
