Major Hiring Push in Government Hospitals, Says Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha

The state government is accelerating the recruitment of doctors , nursing officers , and other staff in government hospitals, Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha informed the Legislative Council. He said nearly 10,000 vacancies have been filled in the past two years, while recruitment for another 7,000 posts is in the final stage.

The Minister attributed the shortage of doctors to the rapid expansion of medical colleges and difficulties in recruiting qualified faculty as per National Medical Commission norms. To address this, around 1,200 teaching posts have been filled on a contract basis, and recruitment for 607 Assistant Professor posts is underway, expected to conclude by April .

He added that hiring for 1,616 specialist doctors under the Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad is nearing completion. The government has also filled over 7,000 nursing posts and more than 1,500 lab technicians positions, with additional nursing recruitment set to finish soon.

Meanwhile, Council Chairman Sukender Reddy suggested expanding access to generic medicine outlets in government hospitals and controlling rising drug prices.

The Minister reiterated that providing quality healthcare remains a priority. He stated that no new private medical shop licenses have been issued and existing ones are being phased out, with affordable medicines to be ensured through generic stores.
