Major Governor Rejig: Shukla Gets Telangana Post, Mamata Protests Move to Foist Ravi on WB

Shiv Pratap Shukla has been appointed as the new Governor of Telangana , replacing Jishnu Dev Varma , who will now serve as the Governor of Maharashtra . The decision was announced through an official notification from Rashtrapati Bhavan , as part of a major reshuffle of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across several states and Union Territories .

Shukla, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party , previously served as Union Minister of State for Finance and was most recently the Governor of Himachal Pradesh . His appointment to Telangana will take effect from the date he assumes charge. The oath-taking ceremony is expected to be held at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad , where the oath will likely be administered by the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court .

Meanwhile, the reshuffle has triggered a political controversy in West Bengal . Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and deep concern over the resignation of Governor C. V. Ananda Bose and strongly criticised the Centre for appointing R. N. Ravi , currently the Governor of Tamil Nadu , as the new Governor of West Bengal. Banerjee alleged that the Union Home Ministry took the decision without consulting the state government , calling it a move that undermines the spirit of the Constitution and cooperative federalism , especially ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

The reshuffle includes several other key appointments. Vinai Kumar Saxena , Lieutenant Governor of Delhi , has been appointed Lt. Governor of Ladakh , while former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu will take charge as the new Lt. Governor of Delhi.

Additionally, Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed Governor of Nagaland , and Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain will serve as the Governor of Bihar . Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar , Governor of Kerala , will discharge the functions of Governor of Tamil Nadu, while Kavinder Gupta , the Lt. Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed as the new Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

Even though Governors are meant to function as constitutional heads of states, opposition parties have increasingly alleged that the Centre is using these posts to exert pressure on state governments, particularly those run by rival political parties. Such concerns have resurfaced following the latest round of gubernatorial appointments.
