Mahindra launches XEV 9S: India’s first 7-seater EV SUV at ₹19.95 lakh, targets 7,000 monthly sales
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has officially launched the XEV 9S, a seven-seater electric SUV priced from ₹19.95 lakh, adding another model to the company’s growing electric vehicle fleet. The SUV is built on Mahindra’s dedicated INGLO electric-origin platform, with test drives scheduled to begin on January 5. Customers can start selecting preferences from December 14, with bookings opening January 14 and deliveries expected to start from January 23.
The XEV 9S is India’s first purpose‑built electric 7‑seater SUV, offering a three‑row cabin with sliding and reclining second‑row seats, likely captain-style, ventilated seating, powered boss-mode seats, and integrated sunshades. It measures 4,737 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, 1,747 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,762 mm. By comparison, popular 7‑seaters like the Toyota Innova Crysta and Maruti Ertiga have lengths of around 4,735 mm and 4,395 mm respectively, with similar wheelbases, but the XEV 9S’s SUV‑scale footprint and EV layout provide more usable interior space and a modern, spacious feel, especially for long trips, while also integrating features like a frunk, MAIA AI system, and advanced safety technologies.
Executives highlighted the SUV’s market positioning. R Velusamy, President - Automotive Business, said, “The XEV 9S creates more space than any other vehicle in its segment and delivers a smooth, noise-free ride.” CEO Nalinikanth Gollagunta added, “This SUV signals the start of a big new electric era for Mahindra, built on scale, purpose, and a deep understanding of how India moves.” Design Chief Pratap Bose described the vehicle as a personal sanctuary that combines comfort, style, and functionality.
In comparison with other EVs in the ₹15-22 lakh range, such as the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400 EV, and Tata Curvv EV, the XEV 9S stands out for its three-row layout, SUV-scale spaciousness, and advanced features, targeting buyers who prioritize comfort, long-distance capability, and a full SUV experience.
Mahindra plans to sell around 7,000 EV units per month by the end of this fiscal, moving toward an operating production capacity of 8,000 units per month, said Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO for auto and farm sectors. Currently, M&M sells 4,000-5,000 EVs monthly and has already sold over 30,000 units (BE6 and XEV 9) in the past seven months, generating revenue of around ₹8,000 crore. In comparison, overall EV sales in India in 2024 reached about 99,000 units. Tata Motors led with roughly 61,500 EVs, about 62% market share. Given M&M’s recent sales run-rate, its share remains much smaller than Tata’s, though the push for XEV 9S and ramp‑up targets could meaningfully narrow the gap.
The company is also building EV charging infrastructure, aiming for 1,000 charging points by 2027, and exploring solutions for end-of-life battery recycling. Exports will be undertaken cautiously, starting with right-hand-drive markets. All trims of the XEV 9 are eligible for the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, with BE6 and 9S applications in progress.
With the launch of the XEV 9S and an ambitious sales target, Mahindra aims to redefine India’s EV landscape, offering families, travellers, and tech-savvy buyers a versatile, modern, and high-performance electric SUV that combines comfort, space, and cutting-edge innovation.
