Mumbai Indians have announced the departure of head coach Mahela Jayawardene, ending a decade-long association with the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions. The decision comes after the franchise finished ninth in IPL 2026, following a fourth-place finish in 2025. With IPL 2027 approaching, the franchise is preparing for a coaching transition, squad reassessment and a possible strategic reset.

Jayawardene won three IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020 during his first stint as head coach from 2017 to 2022. He subsequently served as MI's Global Head of Performance from 2022 to 2024 before returning as head coach ahead of the 2025 season, replacing Mark Boucher. Despite his earlier success, Mumbai failed to secure another championship during his second stint.

MI owner Nita Ambani praised Jayawardene's leadership, integrity and commitment, while the Sri Lankan great thanked Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their continued trust and support. Jayawardene, who led Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup final, also acknowledged the players, coaching staff and fans for their contribution to his journey.

Five Candidates Reportedly in Contention

According to media reports, Mumbai Indians have shortlisted five candidates for the vacant position: Michael Hussey, Aaron Finch, Eoin Morgan, Mark Boucher and Adrian Birrell. Hussey brings extensive coaching experience with Chennai Super Kings, while Finch and Morgan offer international captaincy experience. Boucher's previous association with MI could provide continuity, while Birrell brings international coaching experience. However, the franchise has not officially confirmed the shortlist or announced a successor.

Captaincy and Squad Restructuring in Focus

The incoming coach will face the challenge of improving team cohesion and addressing tactical shortcomings, including powerplay batting, middle-over scoring and death bowling. The transition also comes amid continuing discussion surrounding the captaincy change from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya ahead of the 2024 season.

Mumbai Indians must prepare for the November 15 player-retention deadline, with the auction expected around mid-December in Goa, according to the supplied PTI report. The franchise's support structure includes assistant coach Paras Mhambrey, batting coach Kieron Pollard and bowling coach Lasith Malinga. Reports have also indicated that Zubin Bharucha joined MI as director of performance.

The new appointment will be crucial as Mumbai seek to restore consistency, strengthen squad balance and return to title contention in IPL 2027.
