Mahavatar Narsimha , India’s epic mythological animation, is now officially in contention for the Best Animation Oscar, standing tall against 35 films from around the world. The film, directed by Ashwin Kumar and produced by Kleem Productions in association with Hombale Films, brings to life the divine tales of Vishnu’s Varaha and Narasimha avatars, combining rich storytelling with world-class visual effects. Its unique cultural narrative and technical brilliance set it apart in a crowded field of global animated features.

When Kumar’s Mahavatar Narsimha was released in India, no one had quite expected the box office reception it received. Released in four languages Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Tamil, the film’s India net collection reached Rs 250 crore, making it the highest-grossing animated film in the country. The film’s photorealistic animation, painstakingly crafted over four-and-a-half years, has received widespread acclaim for its striking visual style and cinematic quality. Scenes depicting Narasimha’s cosmic battle and Varaha’s heroic feats showcase animation standards on par with top international studios, proving that Indian animation can compete on the world stage.

Beyond its technical achievement, the film resonates emotionally and thematically, exploring universal ideas of justice, devotion, and courage, which makes it appealing to audiences beyond India. Its ambitious plan to launch a Mahavatar Cinematic Universe demonstrates the film’s potential to influence global animation storytelling. Multilingual releases have helped it reach wider audiences, enhancing its international recognition.

This year, several other Indian films are also in the running for various Oscar categories. Titles such as Kanguva (Tamil), Aadujeevitham (Malayalam/Hindi), Santosh (Hindi), Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi), All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam/Hindi), Girls Will Be Girls (Hindi/English), Putul (Bengali), Laapataa Ladies (Hindi), Maidaan (Hindi), and the short film Anuja (Hindi) have all been recognized as eligible for consideration across categories from Best Picture to Best International Feature Film and Live Action Short Film. The inclusion of Mahavatar Narsimha in this distinguished list marks a historic milestone for Indian animation, highlighting its potential to compete at the highest level.

As the Academy evaluates 36 films for the Best Animation category, Mahavatar Narsimha stands out for its blend of cultural depth, technical mastery, and emotional storytelling. Its Oscar consideration represents a moment of pride for Indian cinema and a chance for the world to experience the richness and artistry of Indian animated filmmaking.
