Visitors at Delhi’s Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya are set for a striking blend of history and artificial intelligence, as the museum prepares to unveil hyper realistic AI powered 3D avatars of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee .

The project, currently in its final stage , is expected to be launched by the end of May, according to officials from the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library (PMML). Once live, the avatars will allow visitors to interact with the two iconic leaders , creating an immersive and conversational experience of India’s political history.

The initiative builds on the museum’s earlier experiments with AI based exhibits. It had previously introduced a life size AI Holobox of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel , followed by an interactive installation of former President A P J Abdul Kalam. The response, officials said, encouraged the expansion of this technology to other national leaders.

“We are working to bring extensive use of AI to enhance the visitor experience,” PMML Director Ashwani Lohani said. He noted that the aim is to make the museum more engaging while preserving historical authenticity through modern tools.

The Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, inaugurated in 2022 , has quickly grown into a major heritage destination in the capital, recording a footfall of over 6.4 lakh visitors in the 2025-26 financial year . Spread across the historic Teen Murti complex, the museum narrates the journey of India’s democracy through all Prime Ministers since Independence.

Alongside the AI avatars, the museum is steadily expanding its technology driven exhibits . These include immersive experiences such as a simulated helicopter ride over national infrastructure projects like the Atal Tunnel and Chenab Bridge, as well as a defence themed gallery showcasing India’s military capabilities and key operations.

Visitors can also experience interactive features such as taking a digitally generated photograph with any former Prime Minister, where AI places the leader beside the visitor in a realistic frame sent digitally later.

The museum is also exploring accessibility driven innovations, including smart glass technology designed to assist visually challenged visitors with AI powered audio descriptions of exhibits.
