Maharashtra has launched the country’s first dedicated menopause clinics across government hospitals and urban health facilities, marking a significant step towards addressing the long-neglected physical and mental health needs of women during menopause. The initiative was launched on January 14 , coinciding with Makar Sankranti , under the guidance of Minister of State for Health Meghna Bordikar , officials said.

Menopause is a natural but sensitive phase in a woman’s life, often accompanied by physical changes, hormonal imbalance, mental stress, sleep disorders, bone-related problems and depression. Despite these challenges, the phase has largely remained outside the focus of structured public healthcare, prompting the state government to introduce specialised clinics exclusively for menopausal women.

The menopause clinics offer expert medical consultations , mental health counselling , and screening for bone, cardiac and hormonal health , along with medicines and guidance, all under one roof. The aim is to provide comprehensive, dignified and accessible care to women during this critical transition.

“Menopause is not a disease but a natural phase in a woman’s life. However, women require strong physical and emotional support during this period. These clinics have been started to ensure they receive proper advice, treatment and dignity,” Bordikar said.

According to officials, Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to roll out such dedicated menopause clinics, an initiative expected to serve as a model for other states .

Health experts said the programme could have a far-reaching impact on women’s healthcare in India by bringing menopause into the mainstream public health framework. By enabling early detection of bone, cardiac and mental health issues and reducing stigma around menopause, the initiative is expected to improve the quality of life for millions of women.

Officials added that the clinics have already received a positive response across the state, with many women expressing satisfaction and gratitude for the focused healthcare support.
