Maharashtra goes high-tech for women’s safety

The Maharashtra Transport Department has introduced a range of technology-driven measures aimed at strengthening the safety of female passengers in public transport. Announced by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, the initiatives include a mobile application and supporting monitoring systems designed to provide real-time alerts, emergency assistance, and improved regulatory oversight.

At the core of the safety initiative is the Black Spot App, which notifies drivers about accident-prone zones and integrates emergency services such as the police, fire brigade, ambulance, and a dedicated women’s helpline (1091). Passengers can instantly connect with authorities in case of emergencies, with officials able to track the vehicle in real-time to ensure prompt assistance.

Complementing this, a WhatsApp-based service has been introduced, allowing commuters to quickly access vehicle-related details, including registration and tax information. This feature enhances transparency and helps passengers verify the legitimacy of public transport vehicles, boosting overall trust and confidence.

The department has also deployed an AI-Enabled Tax Defaulter Vehicle Monitoring System, which uses real-time tracking and CCTV data to identify vehicles evading taxes. By ensuring compliance, this system enhances safety and accountability in the city’s transport network.

Another supporting measure, the Non-Use Vehicle Monitoring System, identifies inactive vehicles to prevent tax evasion and guarantees that only operational and compliant vehicles are active on the roads. Together, these systems improve enforcement, streamline monitoring, and reinforce commuter security.

These initiatives are part of a pilot project launched on September 8, 2025, without a formal inauguration. The systems are integrated into the central RTO Thane Communication System to optimize public service delivery and administrative efficiency. If the pilot proves successful, the Transport Department plans to expand the measures across Maharashtra.

Minister Sarnaik highlighted that the adoption of digital tools and AI-driven monitoring marks a major step toward creating a safer, smarter, and more reliable public transport ecosystem, particularly for female commuters. He added that these solutions not only improve passenger security but also enhance accountability and transparency in the transport sector.

By leveraging technology and real-time monitoring, Maharashtra is setting a benchmark for other states seeking to modernize their transport infrastructure while ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers.
