Maharashtra, Australia join hands for skills hub

The Maharashtra government will establish the Maharashtra-Australia Innovation and Skills Hub (MAISH) to connect the state’s industrial and educational ecosystem with Australian expertise, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil announced on Tuesday. The initiative aims to foster research, innovation, and skill development in critical sectors such as energy, environment, and healthcare.

Addressing the vision behind the hub, Patil said, “The Maharashtra-Australia Innovation and Skills Hub is not just an academic initiative but a forward-looking step to transform the state into a sustainable knowledge economy.” The minister chaired a high-level meeting at Mantralaya, attended by senior officials, academicians, and directors from higher and technical education departments, to discuss the hub’s operational framework.

MAISH will function under the Australia-India Centre of Excellence, following discussions between Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and his Australian counterpart Jason Clare. The project embodies a shared commitment to youth empowerment, innovation, and strengthening bilateral ties.

Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur—Maharashtra’s major educational and industrial centres—will serve as key nodes, addressing global challenges such as climate change, rising energy demands, and sustainable development. Participating institutions include IIT Bombay, University of Mumbai, Savitribai Phule Pune University, DY Patil University, and Australia’s Newcastle, Monash, RMIT, and Sydney universities.

The hub will offer international-level courses, specialised skill training, and global opportunities for students. It plans to train undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students, encourage the development of patent-worthy technologies in energy and healthcare, and facilitate the exchange of scientists and researchers between India and Australia.

Patil emphasized that this collaboration marks a new chapter in Maharashtra-Australia relations, reinforcing the state’s position as a hub of innovation, industry, and global knowledge.
