Madurantakam, Dharapuram By-Polls to Test Vijay Government’s Early Political Strength

The October 6 by-elections in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies will be the first electoral test of the three-month-old Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The contests come as the new administration navigates a post-poll coalition, a narrow majority in the Assembly and emerging differences among its allies.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled polling for October 6, with counting on October 9. Both constituencies are Scheduled Caste-reserved seats and are among seven Assembly constituencies currently vacant in Tamil Nadu. The vacancies in Madurantakam and Dharapuram were created after former AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama, respectively, resigned shortly after the April 2026 Assembly election results and joined TVK. Both submitted their resignation letters to Assembly Speaker J C D Prabhakar before switching parties.

The immediate question for TVK is whether it will renominate the two former AIADMK legislators or field party loyalists. The decision could signal whether Vijay's party intends to accommodate defectors or build an independent political organisation.

The stakes are also tied to the government's legislative arithmetic. TVK currently holds 107 seats in the 234-member Assembly, below the 118-seat simple-majority mark. Its government depends on support from the Congress, VCK, IUML and Left parties. During the floor test, 22 AIADMK rebel MLAs backed the government, helping it secure 144 votes.

Winning both seats would marginally strengthen TVK's numbers while providing political momentum. For the AIADMK, the contests are an opportunity to reclaim seats lost through defections, while the DMK will seek to exploit any early vulnerabilities in the new administration.

The by-polls also come amid coalition friction, including differences with Congress over the alliance's 2029 political direction, while sections of TVK have projected Vijay as a possible prime ministerial candidate against Congress's preference for Rahul Gandhi. The CPI has also protested over inflation.

The other five vacant seats are Tiruchirappalli East, Ambasamudram, Viralimalai, Perundurai and Karur, but the ECI has not yet announced polls for them.

Nominations will be filed from September 9 to 16, scrutiny will take place on September 17 and withdrawals close on September 19. The Model Code of Conduct is already in force in the two constituencies. The results on October 9 could offer an early verdict on TVK's ability to consolidate power after its breakthrough 2026 election.
