Madurai Meenakshi Temple Consecration Held After 17 Years Amid Thousands of Devotees

The Maha Kumbabhishekam, or consecration ceremony, of the renowned Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple in Madurai was performed on Thursday amid the chanting of Vedic mantras and the presence of thousands of devotees.

Priests conducted the sacred rituals and poured sanctified water on the Vimanams of the Meenakshi Amman shrine and the Sundareshwarar Swamy shrine. Devotees gathered around the massive temple towers to witness the ceremony.

The Abhishekam was followed by maha deeparadhana, a special lamp ritual. Priests subsequently sprinkled holy water on the devotees who had gathered for the ceremony.

According to temple sources, the main ceremony was held between 7.45 am and 8.10 am. The rituals were accompanied by Vedic chants and a spiritual atmosphere as several thousands of devotees attended the event.

The Yagasala rituals associated with the consecration began on September 11 and continued until September 16, according to temple sources.

The temple was illuminated on Wednesday night ahead of the ceremony, which was held after a gap of 17 years. Several hundred devotees arrived on Wednesday night and took positions around the temple to witness the morning rituals.

Ahead of the Kumbabhishekam, the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department carried out a major renovation programme at the temple.

The department undertook 186 distinct restoration works at a cost of Rs 32.29 crore, according to officials.The restoration work included cleaning, structural repairs and repainting of all 14 gateway towers of the temple. The work was carried out under the guidance of experts from the Archaeology Department.

The consecration ceremony marked the completion of the preparations undertaken for the temple ahead of the religious event.

The Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple, one of Madurai’s prominent religious landmarks, saw large numbers of devotees gather around the complex to witness the rituals.

The ceremony began in the morning with priests performing the prescribed rituals and conducting the Abhishekam of the temple’s shrine Vimanams.The holy water was later sprinkled among devotees as part of the ceremony.

The event concluded with the maha deeparadhana, following which devotees witnessed the completion of the Maha Kumbabhishekam at the historic temple.
