Made-in-India warship strengthens coastal defences

The Indian Navy has strengthened its fleet with a new indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare ship, reflecting the country’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. This addition comes at a time when China’s increasing presence in the Indian Ocean has made maritime security a key priority.

The ship, named Androth, is the second of eight anti-submarine warfare-shallow water craft (ASW-SWC) being built for the Navy. Constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, Androth was officially handed over to the Indian Navy. This milestone highlights India’s commitment to developing advanced naval capabilities domestically, reducing reliance on imports, and supporting the government’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Androth is named after Androth Island in the Lakshadweep archipelago (group of islands located close to each other), symbolizing India’s dedication to protecting its vast maritime territory. At around 77 metres long, it is one of the largest Indian Naval warships powered by a diesel engine-waterjet system. The ship is equipped with modern lightweight torpedoes (underwater weapons) and indigenous anti-submarine rockets, enhancing the Navy’s ability to detect and neutralize underwater threats while also strengthening coastal surveillance.

According to the Navy, more than 80% of Androth’s components are domestically produced, showcasing India’s growing shipbuilding expertise. The induction of this ship is not just a technological achievement but also a statement of strategic intent, demonstrating India’s resolve to secure its waters and maintain a strong maritime presence in the region.

With Androth joining the fleet, the Indian Navy is better equipped to respond to challenges, ensuring safety along the coastline and safeguarding national interests across the seas.
