Maa Kauvery Chennai Inaugurated: 120-Bed Facility Brings Women, Newborn and Child Care Under One Roof

Chennai’s healthcare landscape is set for a major addition with the launch of Maa Kauvery, a dedicated 120-bed women and children’s hospital at Kauvery Hospital’s Radial Road facility. Inaugurated on August 26 by Tamil Nadu Health Minister Dr K. G. Arunraj, the centre brings maternity, fertility, obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology and paediatric critical care together.

The Chennai facility builds on Kauvery’s experience with its 200-bed Maa Kauvery in Trichy, which became operational on January 29, 2024, and was formally launched in June that year. Kauvery says its paediatric programme has evolved over 25 years, with neonatal and paediatric intensive-care capabilities developed before the dedicated Trichy facility. The Trichy hospital features a 50-bed NICU, 16-bed PICU, 11-bed paediatric emergency unit and 10-bed high-dependency unit, alongside transplant and specialised paediatric services.

The Trichy model also serves a broad regional catchment. Kauvery says its Trichy facilities draw patients from more than 200 km away for neonatal, paediatric and other tertiary services, underscoring demand for specialised care beyond major metropolitan centres.

In Chennai, Maa Kauvery will provide 24/7 maternity care, including normal and high-risk pregnancy management, dedicated birthing facilities, antenatal, delivery and postnatal services, fetal medicine and advanced laparoscopic gynaecological surgery. Fertility services will include IUI and IVF.

For newborns, its Level 3 NICU is designed for critically ill and highly premature babies, including those born before 30 weeks or weighing under 1.5 kg. Children will have access to a PICU, 24/7 paediatric emergency services and specialists in pulmonology, nephrology, haematology and neonatology.

Women’s healthcare will extend beyond pregnancy to adolescent and reproductive health, menstrual concerns, PCOS, menopause, gynaecologic oncology and breast health, including mammography.

A Chennai-specific investment figure has not been publicly disclosed. However, the project adds dedicated capacity and specialist infrastructure to Kauvery’s established Radial Road ecosystem. Its significance lies in continuity of care, potentially reducing referrals between separate facilities and giving families access to specialised services across pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care and childhood under one roof, with round-the-clock specialist support available locally.
