Lucknow Unveils Nausena Shaurya Vatika, Bringing India's Naval Legacy to the Public

In a significant step towards preserving military heritage and strengthening public engagement with the armed forces, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday inaugurated the Nausena Shaurya Vatika in Lucknow. The open-air naval museum, developed jointly by the Indian Navy and the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department , is being positioned as a landmark destination that combines remembrance, education and tourism.

Located in the CG City area of the state capital, the memorial is dedicated to the bravery, sacrifices and achievements of the Indian Navy. Officials said the project aims to inspire younger generations, promote awareness about maritime security and strengthen the spirit of patriotism among citizens.

The centrepiece of the museum is INS Gomati , a guided-missile frigate that served the Indian Navy for more than three decades before being decommissioned on May 28, 2022 . Named after the Gomti River, the warship has been transformed into a public exhibit, offering visitors a glimpse into India's naval history and operational capabilities.

Apart from INS Gomati, the memorial features several naval assets and equipment, including an AK-726 medium-range naval gun , CET-53M submarine obstacle equipment , a ZIF-101 launcher , anchor, capstan drum, main mast and ship propeller. These exhibits provide civilians with a rare opportunity to closely observe technologies used in maritime defence operations.

Speaking at the inauguration, Rajnath Singh said such memorials play an important role in connecting people with the sacrifices and service of military personnel. He noted that maritime security has become increasingly important for India's economic and strategic interests and highlighted the Navy's growing role in safeguarding national security.

The inauguration also reflects a broader trend in India and around the world, where military memorials are evolving into centres of public outreach, civic education and collective remembrance . Similar initiatives, including the National War Memorial in New Delhi, have sought to preserve stories of military service while fostering a deeper understanding of the armed forces among civilians.

Officials believe the Nausena Shaurya Vatika will emerge as a major military tourism destination , attracting students, researchers, defence enthusiasts and tourists. Beyond showcasing naval hardware, the memorial seeks to serve as a living tribute to India's maritime heritage and the men and women who protect the nation's interests at sea.
